Screening dates for »Super« @ TIFF 2010 / 1st ever pic of Libby / Bee the Change National Campaign has been funded

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced the entire slate of its 35th annual edition. Overall, 246 titles across more than 10 programs will screen at this year's festival, which takes place September 9 - 19. Some of my personal favorites are »Black Swan« (with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis), »Kaboom« (with Thomas Dekker, Juno Temple and Haley Bennett), »Trigger« (directed by Bruce McDonald, with Molly Parker), »Tamara Drewe« (with Gemma Arterton and Luke Evans), »Let Me In« (with Chloe Moretz, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Elias Koteas), »Never Let Me Go« (with Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley) and »The Whistleblower« (with Rachel Weisz and the talented German actress Paula Schramm). I hoped to see Johnathon Kay's »Na Nai'A Legend of the Dolphins« in the line-up, but it looks like he didn't submit his epic feature film documentary.

The celebrity guest list includes names such as Clint Eastwood, Helen Mirren, Danny Boyle, Hilary Swank, Robert Redford, Nicole Kidman, Matt Damon, Milla Jovovich, Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro, Clive Owen, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Paul Giamatti, Marion Cotillard, Keanu Reeves, Abigail Breslin, Ryan Gosling, Blake Lively, William H. Macy, Malin Akerman, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Josh Hartnett, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Spacey, Megan Fox and Harvey Keitel.

Here are the official description and screening dates for »Super«:

TIFF 2010 - Official description
(written by Colin Geddes)

With the recent onslaught of superhero send-ups, it seems as though this premise has become somewhat of a genre unto itself. No stranger to rebel filmmaking, James Gunn cut his teeth writing for Troma before making his directing debut with 2006’s Slither. In a similar vein, his follow-up feature combines absurd humour with balls-out violence to create something that is both unashamed and inimitable. But this time Gunn adds a new ingredient, one that is dark, dramatic and subversive to the core.

When sad sack Frank D’Arbo (Rainn Wilson) sees his ex-addict wife (Liv Tyler) willingly snatched by a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), he finds himself unable to cope. But when the finger of God blesses his brain (don’t ask), D’Arbo decides to fight back under the guise of a DIY superhero called Crimson Bolt. In order to get his wife back, he must first fight his way up the criminal ranks, and he begins by taking a monkey wrench to the foreheads of a couple who cut in line at the movies. As Crimson Bolt begins to make the headlines, a young woman from the local comic book store (Ellen Page) joins in on the fun as his sexually charged sidekick, Boltie.

The cast is dead-on, with Wilson making the heroic leap to leading man status. Page and Bacon are equally impressive and self-effacing in their supporting roles; both say and do things you could never imagine and we could never print. Rounding out the cast are appearances from longtime genre icons Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Michael Rooker (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) and Troma’s own Lloyd Kaufman.

While Crimson Bolt bears likeness to the Watchmen, Defendor and Kick-Ass, James Gunn has created what is perhaps the definitive take on self-reflexive superheroes. If this outlandish dark comedy is not the zenith of its breed, God help us from what’s to come. Whether you’re new to the graphic novel game or a seasoned fanboy, you will find SUPER to live up to its name.

Thanks to the help of 235 backers, the Bee the Change National Campaign has been successfully funded. This was definitely a step in the right direction. But the truth is the filmmakers need about $100,000 to reach all their goals, such as hiring a publicist, editing an educational version for the scheduled campus tour and bringing the film to theaters in the spring of 2011. So please do continue to donate via the PayPal link on the official website!

You may also support the project by organizing event screenings in local theaters, venues like churches, libraries and schools or other spaces for smaller groups like your own home. No venue is too small or too big! Download a PDF copy of the Bee the Change materials campaign overview, toolkit and screening application for further details. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Maryam Henein & George Langworthy at info@vanishingbees.com.

Biosolid fight in Halifax gets a little help from Ellen Page / James Gunn confirms world premiere of »Super«

The city of Halifax recently spread biosolids - a fertilizer that includes treated human waste - on large swaths of roadside grass, in a suburb where rows of rose bushes were removed. Now people are complaining about a foul smell and are upset that they weren't informed of the move. After visiting the Clayton Park neighbourhood and assessing the situation, Ellen made an appearance on CBC News Nova Scotia on Monday to express her displeasure over the inappropriate use of the controversial fertilizer. "The government should not be letting this happen," she told anchor Tom Murphy. "It's taking industrial waste, waste from hospitals, businesses, households, full of man-made chemicals, highly toxic, proven carcinogens, radioactive material, and they're putting it on our soil. They're putting it into our ecosystem. You know what? They can practise on their own lawns." In her opinion, a lot more research is needed into whether it's safe and there should be more public input surrounding the use of the substance.

Admittedly, this is not my fight and as an outsider I can only comment based on the information provided by the media. But I implicitly trust Ellen's judgement and if she stands up and says something is not right then we should listen. I am firmly convinced she really cares about her hometown and isn't doing all this just to get attention. At the same time, she is not the only one who thinks this way. According to the latest online polls, almost 70 percent don't want biosolids to be used in Halifax Regional Municipality's urban areas. That should make us think, shouldn't it?

However, Richard MacLellan of the city’s Sustainable Environment Management Office takes another position. "There are no health concerns with this. Biosolids in Nova Scotia have the highest and most stringent regulations by far in Canada. They do not require approval for land application and they are labelled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as a fertilizer."

Regardless of the effect the mixture might have on people's health, I personally can't understand why Halifax city council decided to spread biosolids on medians along Dunbrack Street and in Point Pleasant Park without asking or alerting residents. Did they think nobody would notice the smell that can be compared to a sewer or a messy toilet? Why aren't they using normal compost instead, which is high in organics and a much more reliable alternative? Anyway, I hope the situation will be resolved soon and the Haligonians can work out a solution that is acceptable to all concerned!

From the interview Ellen did on CBC Radio last week we have learned that »Super« is set to debut at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Today director James Gunn has finally confirmed that his movie will make its world premiere on September 10, 2010 as part of this year’s »Midnight Madness« line-up and Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Sean Gunn, Stephen Blackehart, Andre Royo and others will be in attendance for the event. Check the calendar here on EPO, where I will add screening dates and ticket information as they become available. Also visit the official website thecrimsonbolt.com for updates on the movie!
